CREATION REVEALS

This day begins a new month, September.  As gentle sunlight creeps across the valley, cutting through the fog, I hear dogs barking in the distance and the last hoot of an owl.  Birds are singing their welcome of creation.  With gratitude, I contemplate mystery, in the delight for these sounds.

Today, a child will be born and an elder will die.  A fight will break out in a school, someone will be hired for a new job and a day of retirement will begin after a long career.  Souls will respond to unforeseen tragedies; a car accident, a heart attack, a senseless act of violence from a gun.  An apple will fall, a peanut will be cracked, a ball will be caught.  It just happens that way.

Thankfully, songs will be sung and artists will throw pottery or dabble in paint, creating something for us to enjoy and cherish.  The writer from Ecclesiastes reminds us of this cadence and rhythm of life.  “For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven” (3:1).  Gifts from the Spirit, yielded to sustain us as we walk or hobble in the day.
